“It only takes one person to help someone feel inspired.”
As we move forward with our “Growing with Intention” strategic plan, this sentiment serves as the heartbeat of our mission. In the food and agriculture industry, we often talk about “infrastructure,” the systems and technology that move our food from farm to table. But the most critical infrastructure we have is our people.
To build a truly sustainable and inclusive workforce, we must recognize that allyship, mentorship, and representation are not just buzzwords; they are the tools we use to build a sense of belonging.
The ripple effect of mentorship
Inspiration isn’t just a feeling; it is a catalyst for tangible change. We see this impact personified in our own leadership. Throughout my professional career, I have been blessed to personally mentor 175+ individuals within the industry.
The “ripple effect” of this dedicated mentorship is staggering. These 175+ mentees have gone on to:
- Pursue advanced degrees in specialized agricultural-related fields.
- Publish groundbreaking research that informs industry standards.
- Establish grassroots organizations that serve local communities.
- Create significant national and international impacts on food security and policy.
This proves that when one person takes the time to invest in another, the result isn’t just one improved career, it’s an entire industry transformed. But most importantly, each and every one of them has paid it forward and given that same mentorship to someone else!
Representation matters: From middle school to the boardroom
For a student in middle school or a young professional entering their first role. Or a seasoned professional looking for a career change, the perception of the food and ag industry is often limited by what and who they see.
- Representation allows a person to see a mirror of their own potential.
- Allyship ensures that once they enter the room, they have the support to stay there.
- Belonging is the final piece of the puzzle; it is the difference between having a job and having a calling.
Whether we are inspiring a middle schooler to see agriculture as a high-tech career path or supporting a professional in their transition to leadership, we are ensuring the future of our workforce is seen as a home to anyone.

My challenge to you: How will you inspire someone this month?
With gratitude,
