In today’s rapidly evolving workforce, people remain our greatest asset. But talent alone isn’t enough. As organizations across the food and agriculture industry look to remain competitive, it’s critical to remember a fundamental human need: safety and belonging.
The modern workplace must do more than simply employ; it must empower. And that’s where employee resource groups (ERGs) and business resource groups (BRGs)come in. These internal communities are designed to foster connection, elevate voices, and create spaces where employees feel valued and supported.
Why ERGs matter
ERGs are no longer just “nice to have,” they’re a strategic advantage. Research consistently shows that companies that support employee-led groups see higher levels of employee engagement, organizational commitment, and retention. These groups serve as safe spaces for peer mentorship, cultural exchange, and advocacy, ultimately contributing to a more resilient and responsive organizational culture.
For younger generations entering the workforce – particularly Gen Z – alignment with values and belonging in the workplace is non-negotiable. In the absence of supportive structures like ERGs, companies may struggle to attract and retain this purpose-driven talent.
The cost of inaction
Organizations that fail to intentionally invest in supportive workplace cultures risk more than internal disengagement. They risk falling behind in recruitment, innovation, and performance. As social issues continue to shape the expectations of job seekers, employers that stay silent or stagnant will increasingly be overlooked in favor of those that lead with authenticity, empathy, and action.
A model worth replicating: The enERGize Summit at Ardent Mills
We want to give a special shout-out to Beth Luciani and Greg Garrett from Ardent Mills, who recently hosted their inaugural enERGize Summit in Denver, CO, a groundbreaking event that convened all of their internal ERG groups for a powerful day of dialogue, celebration, and connection.
This intentional effort not only showcased Ardent Mills’ commitment to cultivating a culture of support, it provided a blueprint for how food and agriculture companies can activate internal communities for organizational impact. The enERGize Summit created a unique space for employees to bring their whole selves to work while aligning with the company’s broader mission.
At Together We Grow, we believe that creating opportunities for belonging is not just a moral imperative; it’s a strategic one. We encourage our partners and peers to explore how intentional ERG engagement can shape the future of the agricultural and food workforce.
Let’s continue to broaden, connect, and support – together.
