Hello, Together We Grow community,
As we navigate this month, I want to dedicate this message to something deeply personal to all of us who pursue work we genuinely care about: the tension between relentless pursuit and the critical need for pause.
Many of us are drawn to Together We Grow because our mission isn’t just a job, it’s a calling. This passion fuels us, driving those late nights and early mornings. It makes the tough days worthwhile. But this same intense commitment is a double-edged sword. It can lead to burnout if we don’t actively make space for recovery and reflection. True leadership isn’t just about driving forward; it’s also about knowing when to step back and let your work and yourself breathe.
Navigating the balance: commitment vs. exhaustion
In a world that constantly demands more, the art of balance is our greatest leadership tool. Think of your energy not as a limitless resource, but as a garden. You must work it, tend to it, and protect it, but you also must let the soil rest.
Here are a few ways we can collectively and individually navigate this balance:
- The power of the “micro-pause”: You don’t need a week-long vacation to reset. Schedule “non-negotiable time” – a 15-minute walk, a protected hour for deep-focus work without email, or a 30-minute lunch away from your desk. These small, deliberate breaks are scientifically proven to increase focus and creativity.
- Decouple your identity from the outcome: This is a hard one for mission-driven leaders. Remember that your value is not solely measured by the immediate success or failure of a project. When you detach your self-worth from the daily grind, you create emotional space, making challenges easier to manage and successes more authentic.
- The intentional hand-off: Leaders often feel they must hold onto every responsibility. To create space, you must learn to delegate not just tasks, but trust. Training others, empowering your team, and giving them ownership is a win-win: It lightens your load and develops future leaders within the organization.
Protecting our culture in a cautious climate
In today’s environment, where every word can be scrutinized, protecting our organizational culture is more vital than ever. We are all being asked to be cautious and thoughtful about what we say, but this caution should never silence our mission or stifle authentic connection.
A strong culture is not about saying all the right things; it’s about doing the right things consistently.
- Center on shared values: When faced with a challenging decision or a sensitive conversation, ask: Does this align with our mission? Does this embody our commitment to growth and community? This serves as an internal compass that is harder to shake than any external pressure.
- Create psychological safety internally: The external climate may be cautious, but internally, we must foster a space where team members feel safe to speak, ask questions, and challenge ideas respectfully. Our organizational culture is our internal ecosystem – we must protect it by practicing open communication and non-judgmental listening.
- Communicate with clarity, compassion, and consistency: Be transparent about the challenges we face while remaining steadfast in our commitment to the work. When communicating externally, focus on impact and action. Let our positive outcomes speak for themselves.
We lead from the heart, and that is our greatest strength. Let us commit this month to tending to the work and, equally, tending to the workers. By allowing ourselves and our team space to rest and reflect, we ensure that when we step forward, we do so with renewed energy, clarity, and unwavering purpose.
With deep gratitude,
Stephon D. Fitzpatrick, Ph.D.
