Happy New Year from Together We Grow. I can’t believe that six (6) months have already gone by since I became TWG’s new executive director! The first half of my tenure has been full of support, allyship, advocacy, and intentional conversations about how we can advocate and work strategically together to promote a diverse and inclusive food and agricultural workforce. As we prepare to navigate the opportunities and challenges this year will present, I want to lean into the importance of not only creating but living your leadership philosophy.
Whether you currently hold or are seeking to obtain a position of leadership and authority, it is and will be your job to foster a culture of trust all while ensuring your team is productive and feels SUPPORTED. I remember in one of my organizational leadership doctoral classes, my professor stated that a leadership philosophy is not just something that you put on paper, but more so who you are: your morals, your leadership style and attributes. We were challenged to look within to our core values and real-life experiences in order to grow in our professional lives as effective leaders.
Leading an organization like Together We Grow, whose sole mission is to engage in strategic and thoughtful conversations and initiatives to promote a diverse and inclusive workforce, my leadership philosophy requires me to be intentional, cohesive, and to promote a culture of belonging that is contagious. In this month’s issue, I want to challenge you all to revisit or rethink your leadership philosophy based on the following three questions:
- How will you put your leadership philosophy into action?
- How will you treat people?
- How will you keep your team moving forward on goals?
In addition, I want you to write down THREE (3) words that describe you as a leader, and attribute a leadership style to each word. (Check out a list of leadership styles to allocate to your descriptive leadership words.) And don’t worry, I will be dropping my three words and leadership philosophy below!
Lastly, I want you all to create a phrase that sums up your leadership philosophy and three words. Put this phrase in your email signature and as you are engaged in your strategic initiatives and conversations, use this as call sign to remember your “why” in all you do.
Dr. Fitz’s leadership philosophy
As a leader, it is my responsibility to understand and paint a vision of the organization, ensure goals are attainable, and nurture an environment that motivates members to remain committed to the mission and values of the organization.
As a leader, I will work with followers to help turn their strengths into actions and convert challenges to opportunities for growth in order to provide the best service and experience to not just external stakeholders but one another.
As a leader, to keep any team moving forward, I will clearly communicate goals, how to adapt with and navigate change, and remain committed and supportive of team needs to aid in the acquisition of individual and organizational goals.
Three words that describe me as a leader:
- Visionary (transformational leadership)
- Inspirational (altruistic leadership)
- Empathetic (servant leadership)
Leadership phrase: “Agriculture is a people business.”
I hope you find time to think about your leadership philosophy, the work you do, and the impact you want to make. Feel free to reach out and share your philosophy; I would love to read all of them!
