As we continue to cultivate an inclusive and resilient workforce within the agriculture and food industries, it is imperative that we elevate our understanding of intersectionality. Intersectionality – the recognition that people’s identities and experiences are shaped by multiple, overlapping factors such as race, gender, socioeconomic status, sexual orientation, and ability – must be at the heart of our diversity, equity, and inclusion efforts.
Recently, I had the honor of attending the Cultivating Change Summit in Portland, Oregon, where leaders from across our sector gathered to advance conversations on equity and inclusion for the LGBTQ+ community in agriculture. This experience reminded me of the profound strength that lies in embracing all facets of our identities and how doing so creates a more innovative, compassionate, and productive workforce. Special thanks to their executive director, Derek Mulhern, for inviting me to speak and allowing me to connect with their community to ensure strategic workforce initiatives within food and agriculture do not discriminate and view ALL marginalized groups as qualified talent.
By embedding intersectionality into the fabric of our agriculture and food organizations, we not only create fairer workplaces but also unlock new avenues for growth and innovation. Our industry’s strength comes from its diversity, and it is through recognizing and embracing the fullness of that diversity that we will continue to thrive.
